Ah, the metro, where I've spent countless of my weekend hours toiling away underground, staring off into space, sitting on wooden benches and people watching.

This photo, taken by Luke Robinson, was shot outside of the Parisian underground, where I have spent many hours commuting between my sister's apartment in the 17th and downtown Paris. If only all subway systems were as sprawling, clean and inexpensive as the French metro.

I know what you are thinking. It's not a very summery photo I picked. that's exactly why. As I'm sitting here, sweating my butt off, this photo actually looks blissful.

Ultraclay! took this picture on Champs-Elysees in Paris, presumably in the winter. I love that the statue looks like it could be a real person, walking against the wind and snow. You could almost picture the Battle of Stalingrad this way.

Full disclosure: I know Flickr user sgoralnick, who uploaded this sweet composite image of the Pulaski Drawbridge in between Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But you know what? Her novel creation method for this shot deserves some recognition. This photo uses a technique called panography, basically a Photoshop trick that stitches together many different shots of a single image into one giant whole.

It's a novel way to think of taking a photo, isn't it? But that aside, I also think it ends up looking wicked cool. And sometimes, that's all that matters.

I love maps and this photo of Paris taken by ultraclay! looks exactly like one. The angles and lines in this shot are well thought out and make for an excellent composition. Plus it's rare that we see Paris this way; it's nice to have a different view of the city than the Eiffel Tower or glass pyramid at the Louvre.

He lives in Ireland and captured this with a Canon G9 camera. I'm so impressed with the angle he chose that I'm about to run out and take a few shots of some flowers right now!

I'm a fan of funky, distinctive signs. Since I'm in Montana at the moment--and Montana is a land of meat and funky signs, this sign caught my attention.

Ultraclay! snapped this photo in Nashville,Tennessee, however. The hint of of Nashville behind the sign evokes the sense that this is a street for meandering and strolling. Any place that has period lamp posts shows some initiative. Jack's Bar-B-Que won 3 Gold Medals at the 2008 BBQ Expo.

In continuing my theme of Photos of the Day, I'm picking photos that accurately portray how I feel at the time of writing. Today, that's tired.

Buck's photo brings me back to my days in my small two man tent in Montana, and Idaho, traveling across the North and camping all of the way. His long exposure reflects one of the best things about camping: looking up at the stars in the middle of the night and really connecting with nature. I miss being out in the back country, alone in the woods.

I am in Guatemala today and this picture reminds me of how women carry fruit on their heads up here. (I tried it and it is not easy.)

Granted, none of the arrangements here were quite so fancy.

Doesn't this look blissful? Flickr user Bernard-SD took this shot at Yosemite National Park. Summer is one of the best but also the most crowded times at our country's national parks, so it's refreshing to see a great nature shot with nary a human to clutter the view.

Bernard's photo is great not only for the scenery but also because it's nicely framed. I like how the lone hiking path cuts across the foreground, winding off into unknown. The tree on the right is also a nice counterpoint to the gorgeous waterfall on the upper left. Just imagine yourself hiking down this peaceful path, the vista of the park's mountains looming in the distance.
